As a young Constable stationed in Cloncurry during the 1980’s I witnessed the aftermath of a collision between a semi trailer and station wagon. The carnage was terrible but nothing compared to the human cost . A woman and child had died in the wreckage that night and a truck driver was traumatised for life.
An investigation into the accident showed that the truck driver was not at fault and that the car driver was drunk, so not only did she kill herself and her granddaughter but rip apart both her family and the truck drivers family.
I saw there the scourge of drink driving and it’s cost on families , this spurred me into a career in traffic enforcement. I
