DV in LGBTI relationships: getting the conversation started

With the opportunity to gain first-hand insights into issues surrounding DV in LGBTI communities around the world, Senior Constable Ben Bjarnesen’s recent visit overseas has been nothing but invaluable.
As one of the recipients of the 2016 Churchill Fellowship Recipient, Ben was able to conduct research by working closely with international police jurisdictions across four countries.
Ben with the Chief of Washington DC Police
He met with seven police departments and 15 community support organisations last year, with the aim of better understanding and documenting domestic violence issues in LGBTI communities, as well as capturing best practice in policing responses.
“We are all aware that domestic violence is quite an issue within the general community but it can be more so within the LGBTI community and it is often under-reported,” Ben said.
“Internationally, it appears the most common factor stopping LGBTI people from reporting DV and hate crimes is historical events involving negative interactions with

An app that could save your life

When should I call Triple Zero (000)?
This is a very common question asked by many community members and the free Emergency+ app may just have the answer.
Emergency+  is a national app developed by Australia’s emergency services and their Government and industry partners, helping people to call the right number at the right time, anywhere in Australia.
The app uses a mobile phone’s GPS functionality so callers can provide emergency call-takers with their location information as determined by their smart phone.
Emergency+ also includes SES and Police Assistance Line numbers as options, so non-emergency calls are made to the most appropriate number.
When calling Triple Zero 000, remember to stay focused, stay relevant, and stay on the line.
Before you call, ask yourself:

Is someone seriously injured or in need of urgent medical help?
Is your life or property being threatened?
Have you just witnessed a serious accident or crime?

If you answered ‘Yes’ to any of these questions,

Offenders targeting unit garages in Chermside

When it comes to security, high-rise buildings and apartments are just as vulnerable as other residential homes. Poor security habits can put a whole building at risk.
Most offenders are opportunists, searching for quick, easy entry and exit points.
Recently we have had a number of offences in the Chermside area where offenders are gaining entry to secured car parks.
They are then entering vehicles and storage cages and stealing property.
Of concern is that residents are leaving valuable items such as unit keys and building access cards in their vehicles.
It is important that all valuable items are removed from vehicles.
Police are encouraging residents to be alert and to secure their units, vehicles and storage areas. Some tips:

Keep your balcony screens locked at all times, including night-time
Don’t allow unauthorised visitors access to the building
Don’t prop open communal doors
Check garage doors close completely so potential offenders can’t sneak in

If you see someone acting suspiciously in the

Do you have a personal safety plan?

What does personal safety mean to you? Do you have a plan? Without even realising it many people already have an informal safety plan in place, such as carrying a phone, letting someone know when you are expected home or having a spare tyre in the car.
Police encourage members of the public to think about everyday situations they may be in, and to come up with strategies to make you feel secure.
The core personal safety strategies the Queensland Police suggest are:

Being committed
Be confident
Be aware of your surroundings
Trust and act on instincts
Be assertive
Develop a safety network

For more in depth safety information visit our Safer Living booklet.
If you would like further information, or if you would like police to deliver a personal safety presentation to your workplace or community group please contact the Gateway District Crime Prevention Office on 3364 3426.
