West Gateway to celebrate NAIDOC Week
On July 4, Boondall Police will join with key community members in hosting their annual NAIDOC flag raising ceremony. NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee. Its origins can be traced to the emergence of Aboriginal rights groups in the 1920s which sought to increase awareness in the wider community of the status and treatment of Indigenous Australians.
The importance, resilience and richness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander languages will be the focus of national celebrations marking NAIDOC Week 2017.
Some 250 distinct Indigenous language groups covered the continent prior to European contact in the late eighteenth century. Most of these languages had several dialects, so that the total number of named varieties would have run to many hundreds.
Today only around 120 of those languages are still spoken and many are at risk of being lost as Elders pass on.

Officers from Stafford Police Station joined local community members from the Lutwyche Islamic Association to celebrate the Eid-ul-Fitr festival on Sunday, June 25.
The ‘Eid Festival’ is an annual event held by the Lutwyche Mosque located on Fuller Street, Lutwyche.
The ‘Eid Festival’ is one of two festivals celebrated in the Muslim faith each year in celebration of the end of Ramadan.
Stafford police officers attended the event with other specialist police units including the Mounted Unit to support ongoing strong collaborative partnerships with the Lutwyche Mosque and all sectors of the community.
Thanks to the Lutwyche Mosque for inviting us to share in the celebration of this special event.

Fatal traffic crash, Cashmere
The Forensic Crash Unit is investigating following a fatal single vehicle traffic crash in Cashmere overnight.
Emergency services were contacted just before 6:30am this morning after a member of the public located a vehicle on Somers Street.
Initial investigations indicate the car left the road, colliding with a tree and rolling during the night.
The driver and sole occupant of the vehicle, a woman in her 30s, was located deceased at the scene.
