Elder abuse is an act, either single or repeated, which occurs in any relationship where there is an expectation of trust which causes harm or distress to an elderly person. This can be physical, financial, sexual, social, psychological or through neglect.
Elder abuse does not discriminate. Victims of elder abuse can be women or men from ethnic and social backgrounds.
Sadly in 2017-2018, the highest proportion of perpetrators of elder abuse according to calls received by the Elder Abuse Prevention Unit, were the sons and daughters of the older person suffering the abuse.

My story, what’s yours?
Today the Queensland Police Service (QPS) is launching our new recruitment campaign, ‘My story, what’s yours?’, encouraging members of the community to consider a career as a Queensland Police Officer.
The ‘My story, what’s yours?’ campaign has been developed by the QPS to attract the kind of diverse recruit applicants the QPS wants and needs.
As an equal opportunity employer, the QPS recognises that modern policing in a culturally diverse society requires recruits who reflect the State’s gender, cultural, linguistic and regional diversity.
The QPS remains committed to diverse recruitment strategies to attract the best quality recruit applicants into the organisation to contribute to the Government’s objective of keeping the community safe.
These stories will be released through QPS social media platforms over the next few weeks.
This campaign features three women and two men who have undertaken various duties whilst serving in a diverse range of roles and stations across Queensland
Officers visit Aspley Special School
On Wednesday June 12, officers from Boondall Station rolled into Aspley Special School with red and blue flashing lights.
Police from Crime Prevention Unit and the Road Policing Command were armed and ready to face the serious and prolonged questioning from the students of the school covering the following topic areas:
Introduce yourself by your name and the duties you do as police officer;
How did you make a decision to become a police officer;
Explain the uniform and the gear you carry;
The role of the police officers in the community; and
How police supports young people in the community (cyber safety, personal safety, cyber bullying).
Officers in attendance must have passed the school test as they were all issued with certificates of appreciation.
The students were then given some beautiful home made clothing, bag and beanies made the lovely Uniforms 4 Kids (U4K) volunteer sewers from North Brisbane, Maria & Chris, who re-purpose old emergency service
Sexual assault charges, Chermside
Carseldine detectives investigating a series of recent indecent assaults in Brisbane’s north have today charged a 25-year-old man.
It will be alleged the 25-year-old Griffin man unlawfully and indecently assaulted five separate women, aged between 21 and 32, in various stores at a Hamilton Road shopping centre on Tuesday.
He has been charged with five counts of sexual assault and expected to appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on July 1.
Police are appealing for any members of the public who believe they witnessed a man acting suspiciously at Chermside on that day, or believe they were the victim of an assault themselves to contact them.

North Brisbane officers working towards an age-friendly community
On Tuesday June 11, officers from North Brisbane District Crime Prevention Unit attended a Queensland Government, age friendly workshop at the Logan Entertainment Centre.
This was a fantastic opportunity for multiple not-for-profit community groups, neighbourhood centres, local business and government agencies to join together with the common aim of making our communities in Brisbane more inclusive and accessible for all ages.
The Queensland Police Service is always looking for ways to make seniors feel safe, valued, respected and actively engaged in the community.
During the workshop, participants gained a greater understanding of what an age-friendly community really means, and were equipped with resources, including the age-friendly communities good practice review and the age-friendly toolkit.
The age-friendly communities good practice review provides contemporary examples of successful age-friendly community work around Australia, as well as overseas.
The age-friendly toolkit serves as a practical guide to assist local councils, communities and businesses in developing local age-friendly initiatives.

Fraud appeal, Brisbane city
Police have released CCTV footage of a man they want to assist with inquiries in relation to multiple fraud offences.
The man purchased a laptop through an online platform and sent the seller a fake bank transfer confirmation. The seller posted the laptop to a parcel locker at the buyer’s request.
The seller then realised the bank transfer did not occur and attempted to have the laptop returned.
The buyer then pretended to be the seller and collected the laptop from Ann Street in Brisbane City on January 8 this year.
Footage shows the man collecting the laptop shortly after 4pm.
Investigators believe the same man has fraudulently used the identity of another man to open a number of mobile phone accounts.
Police are appealing for anyone who recognises the man or has further information to contact police

Armed robbery charges, South Brisbane
A man has been charged over the alleged armed robbery of a supermarket and attempted robberies of a fast food restaurant and pharmacy at Mount Gravatt today.
Around 1pm the 39-year-old walked into a Logan Road business armed with a knife and demanded cash.
The man attempted to open the register without success and is alleged to have smashed it before leaving empty handed.
He then walked into a nearby restaurant and approached an employee, demanding they open the till.
The staff member complied, and the man is alleged to have stolen a sum of money before leaving on foot.
The man then entered a pharmacy nearby and is alleged to have threatened an employed before forcing them to open a cash register.
He stole a sum of money before fleeing on foot towards Rise Street.
A member of the public was able to call Triple Zero (000) and advise officers of the man’s location.

Serious assault, Queen Street
Police are appealing for members of the public to come forward who may have witnessed an elderly man allegedly being assaulted in the Queen Street Mall on Friday, April 12.
At about 1pm police will allege a 42-year-old man walked past an 81-year-old man in the Queen Street Mall, grabbed him by his shoulders and threw him to the ground.
The two men were not known to each other.
The 81-year-old sustained lacerations to his right elbow.
Police are appealing for any witnesses to come forward and to contact police.
A 42-year-old Forest Lake man has been charged with serious assault of a person over 60.
He will appear at Brisbane Magistrates Court on June 28.

Update: Suspicious death, Bracken Ridge
Detectives investigating the suspicious death of a man at Bracken Ridge on June 1 have charged a man.
The body of a 27-year-old Deagon man was located on the roadway along Barfoot Street around 5.45am.
Police established a crime scene and evidence was collected by forensic officers.
Following a post-mortem examination and toxicology results the death of the man is now considered to be non-suspicious.
As a result of their investigations detectives have charged a 42-year-old Brighton man with misconduct with a corpse, possessing dangerous drugs and possessing utensils or pipes that have been used.
He appeared in Sandgate Magistrates Court yesterday and is next due to appear in Sandgate Magistrates Court on July 8.
