Sharing the road, helping end driver distraction

Constable Stuart Crawford from Boondall Police
My passion for Road Safety comes from the realisation that our roads can be very dangerous places and that we all share our roads with each other and most frequently on a daily basis.
This means that not only ourselves but also our family and friends who we love and care about are all in some way daily users of our roads.
Whether it be driving a personal vehicle or being a passenger in a vehicle or even taking public transport, we can all be affected by the actions of other road users which can lead to both positive and negative outcomes and consequences.
Driving in a courteous manner and giving other road users including cyclists and pedestrians the space to conduct themselves in a safe way also makes us all better road users and reduces the chances of road trauma that can be the result of  the

Winners of QPS Ekka Display prizes

The 2017 Ekka has finished for another year. The Queensland Police Display was a huge hit this year and offered children the opportunity to become Junior Police Officers.
Children were given a police hat, badge, police notebook and had their finger prints taken.  They were also given their first mission which was to attend the individual police displays and several other Government Departments and obtain a stamp from each department in their notebook. Once their notebook was complete, the children came back to the Junior Police Academy and entered a competition to win an iPad, a PS4 or an Xbox One.
There was a total of 2,113 entries in the competition with our winners being:

Isabella Peroni
Jessie Powell
Sam Ryan

Each winner was visited by police from the Crime Prevention Programs Unit and presented with their prize. Needless to say we had three very happy children.
The QPS are very proud of all our new Junior

Wear your seatbelt!

Seatbelts are an important safety feature of any vehicle and compulsory to wear, yet there are a small few who choose not to wear it.
Some people continue to wear the lap/sash style seat belt under the right arm. The sash component of your seat belt cannot perform as its intended and it will not support your upper body in the event of a crash.
A driver also risks being fined if your passenger, regardless of age, isn’t wearing a seat belt or not wearing it correctly. Lap/sash style seatbelts need to be worn in the manner that they were designed for, so it will support the lower and upper body in the event of a crash and air bag deployments.
Talking about children and where they can sit, there are also various differences between vehicles with one row of seats and two.
Cars with only one row of seats can accommodate any child,

Distractions, mobile phones

No excuses!
As a police officer you see a lot of interesting things on the road and one we see all too often is mobile phone offences.

The term “use” encompasses, holding the phone to or near the ear, whether engaged in a phone call or not, to using any function of the phone.

There are further restrictions for young provisional drivers, where you cannot use your mobile phones hands free function or loudspeaker function, even for music. Studies suggest that using your mobile phone is as dangerous as drink driving.
So, when was the last time you used your mobile phone? Did you see the pedestrian that you narrowly avoided colliding with? Or do you remember seeing
