Reminder to lock up following bicycle thefts from Chermside units

When it comes to security, high-rise buildings and apartments are just as vulnerable as other types of residential homes. It’s important to remember that a lack of security can put a whole building at risk.
Most offenders are opportunists; searching for quick, easy entry and exit points.
Recently we have received a number of reports of offences in the Chermside area where offenders are gaining entry to car parks of unit complexes. They are then sealing property from these complexes including bicycles.
Police are encouraging residents to be alert and to secure their units, vehicles and storage areas.
Here are some useful security tips for you to remember:

Keep your balcony screens locked at all times, including night-time
Don’t allow unauthorised visitors access to the building
Don’t prop open communal doors
Check garage doors close completely so potential offenders can’t sneak in
Keep your bicycle in a locked storage area where possible and consider removing the wheel or seat

Road Policing Command Assistant Commissioner Mike Keating said officers had also reported disturbingly high speeds across the state over the past month.
“Despite a 30 per cent reduction of vehicles on Queensland roads, we are seeing a significant increase in the proportion of speeding drivers,” Assistant Commissioner Keating said.
“It is very concerning how often our officers and speed camera systems are detecting exceptionally high speeds.
“The risks of speeding have not changed and the faster you go, the more consequence there is if you hit something or someone else.”
In the past five weeks, the overall rate of detection (per 1,000 vehicles monitored) for operating speed cameras increased by an average of 26 per cent.
