Safer students at university market day

Today, Hendra Police and Police Liaison Officers and Volunteers in Policing had a great time meeting students at the Australian Catholic University Market Day at Banyo.
Great to meet so many friendly faces at today’s university market day
This event was a great opportunity for students, teachers and staff to network and learn about support services and agencies in their local area.
Senior Police Liaison officers enjoyed the opportunity to speak with international students in relation to police reporting procedures, road safety and personal safety among many other topics.

Of particular interest was the ability to contact police in relation to non-urgent matters through Policelink; whether over the phone on 131 444 or through the app.

Traffic crash, Gordon Park

Police are investigating a three-vehicle traffic crash in Gordon Park this morning.
Around 8.40am, a motorcycle was stopped behind a bus at traffic lights on Stafford Road when a utility collided with the motorcycle which crashed into the bus.
The motorcycle rider, a 24-year-old woman, was transported to Royal Brisbane and Woman’s Hospital in a serious condition.
The driver of the utility and the driver and passengers on the bus were not physical injured.
Forensic Crash Unit is urging anyone in the area who witnessed the crash or has dashcam footage to contact police.

Drug and traffic charges, Brighton

On Sunday, February 23, uniform police from Sandgate intercepted a vehicle that was parked with the engine running at the intersection of Morgan Street and Aston Close in Brighton.
It will be alleged that the male driver appeared to be asleep, or under the influence of an unknown substance, at the time of interception.
Police conducted a search of the vehicle with the assistance of a police dog, and allegedly located numerous clip sealed bags containing clear crystals, and green leafy material.
A 26-year-old Kurwongbah man was arrested and charged with several counts of possession of a dangerous drug and numerous traffic related offences.
The man will appear in Sandgate Magistrates Court on April 20.

Police shooting, Brisbane

A man has been shot by police this morning after officers were called to a disturbance following reports a man armed with a knife had stabbed another man in Brisbane city.
Preliminary information indicates police received reports at around 10am that the man had stabbed another man in Mary Street.
It will be alleged the man charged at officers and was critically injured when police returned fire.
The man was pronounced deceased at the scene.
A 26-year-old man has been transported to hospital with facial and back injuries.
This matter is under investigation by Ethical Standards Command on behalf of the State Coroner. That investigation is subject to oversight by the Crime and Corruption Commission.
Police are appealing for anyone with any information which could assist with the investigation to contact or come forward.

Fraud charges, Brisbane

Detectives from the State Crime Command’s Financial and Cyber Crime Group yesterday charged a man with fraud after he allegedly used money from a trust account.
Police will allege that between August 2013 and January 2015 the man, who was the guardian of the victim, misappropriated approximately $46,000.00 that had been left to the victim by a deceased relative.
Police commenced an investigation after receiving a complaint from the victim that money had been allegedly taken without his permission from his trust account. The victim was a child at the time the alleged offences were committed.
Detective Inspector Ben Fadian of the Financial and Cyber Crime Group urged the community to be vigilant to this type of offending.
“Misuse of trust account funds is a serious offence, and the alleged offending in this case is very concerning and a grave abuse of trust,” Detective Inspector Ben Fadian said.

Thanks for joining us at the latest Coffee With a Cop in Taigum

On the third Tuesday of every month, police from North Brisbane attend the Shopping Centre in Taigum for a Coffee With A Cop.
This event is a fantastic opportunity for members of the public to ask questions and raise any concerns they have with their local police.

 
This week, we spoke to members of the community about a wide range of topics including home and vehicle security, personal safety, scams, traffic concerns, Domestic and Family Violence, and Elder Abuse to name just a few.
We were also lucky to be joined by the wonderful volunteers from Crime Stoppers, along with the Zillmere PCYC staff who were promoting the Breaking The Cycle program.

Our next Coffee with a Cop in Taigum will be held on Tuesday, March 19, between 10am and 11am.

Charges laid over vehicle and property offences, Nundah

North Brisbane District Detectives have issued a Notice to Appear to a 40-year-old man of no fixed abode in relation to several vehicle and property-related offences.
These offences allegedly occurred in the suburb of Nundah in early February.
It is alleged that the man entered vehicles parked in carports and driveways and stole property from inside those vehicles.
The man will appear in Brisbane Magistrates Court on March 11.
Residents are reminded to always secure their vehicles, even if they are parked in a multi-residential carpark facility.

Fatal traffic crash, Chermside

A 32-year-old man has died following a traffic crash at Chermside yesterday.
Just before 8:30pm, emergency services were called to a multi-vehicle crash at the intersection of Gympie and Rode roads.
Initial investigations indicate that a white Toyota Corolla was driving in an easterly direction along Rode Road when it travelled through a red light and collided with a Holden Barina and Mitsubishi Pajero.
The Toyota Corolla flipped several times before coming to rest near a bus stop.
Emergency services provided first aid to the driver and sole occupant of the Toyota Corolla, however the man died a short time later.
A 57-year-old man, who was driving the Mitsubishi Pajero, was also transported to hospital in a critical condition.
Occupants of the other vehicles were treated for minor injuries.
Officers from the Forensic Crash Unit are continuing investigations and are appealing for anyone who witnessed the crash, or has dashcam footage, to come

LGBTI-BBQ! Liaison officers sizzle with pride

As an initiative of the Brisbane Regions LGBTI Community Consultative Committee, LGBTI Liaison Officers hosted a BBQ for members of the community to come and meet their local liaison officers, talk about the program and meet with other LGBTI support service providers in New Farm Park on Saturday, February 15.
Around 85 people attended throughout the afternoon, mingling and talking with LGBTI Liaison Officers who were in attendance, some of which appeared in their own time which shows just how passionate these officers are when it comes to supporting the LGBTI community.
It was great for the liaison officers to attend and chat to members of the public
Acting Sergeant Ben Bjarnesen said that the liaison officers all work hard to make members of the public feel more comfortable.

Police are warning mobile phone users to watch out for the latest fake Australia Post text message scam.
Queensland Police have previously warned about this widespread scam as have Australia Post and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission:

A variation of this scam involves a text message that is sent to your mobile, inviting you to follow a link and update information in relation to an in-transit parcel.
This link can be used to extract your personal information and potentially steal your identity.
Delete, delete, delete!
You can call your local Australia Post parcel centre if you have any doubts that there is a legitimate parcel on the way to you, otherwise delete the text message immediately.

Scammer are also targeting people who are advertising goods for sale online and through social media.
