Avoid unnecessary travel in bushfire impacted areas

With a number of fires burning throughout Queensland police are reminding motorists to limit unnecessary travel and keep roads clear for emergency services.

Fires by their very nature are unpredictable and motorists travelling through active bushfire areas could easily find themselves in quickly changing and dangerous situations.
If you live near a active bushfire area please limit all non-essential travel and re-think your need to be on the roads.
Driving conditions can be dangerous due to hazards such as burnt out trees over road ways, fallen power lines, smoke and dust. Please remain vigilant.
Emergency services are working together to return affected residents to their homes however this can only occur when the risk of fire has been mitigated.
This is a timely reminder to be ready to follow your bushfire survival plan. If you do not have a plan, or intend to leave, you should be ready to leave the area because situations can

Join Brisbane North officers for crime prevention week events

From Wednesday November 13, through to Wednesday November 20, crime prevention week will be running in all Bunnings stores.
Police from North Brisbane will be in attendance at the following Bunnings stores to provide the community with information on crime prevention and safety, in particular home  security, vehicle security and property security.

Wednesday November 13, 10am – 12pm at Bunnings Carseldine
Thursday November 14, 10am – 12pm at Bunnings Stafford
Monday November 18, 9.30am – 11.30am at Bunnings Toombull
Tuesday November 19, 9am – 11am at Bunnings Newstead
Wednesday November 20, 10am – 12pm at Bunnings Virginia.

We hope to see as many members of the community as possible, and we might even have a cuppa and a sausage sizzle too!

Security tips for a safer home this summer

As the festive season draws closer, it’s a timely reminder to all households to conduct a quick and simple home security audit check.
Here are a few tips from Hendra Police:

Ensure all doors are solid and fitted with a quality deadlock.
Install security screen to all exterior doors and windows. Look for security screen that meet Australian Standards.
Fit locks to all windows, however, don’t leave the keys in the lock – the locks should be a good quality lock that meets Australian Standards.

These are just a few tips to help keep your home safer this Christmas.

Shooting, Morayfield

A crime scene has been declared after a woman was shot in her Morayfield home last night.
Shortly after 10pm, six people have attended at an address in Hargrave Street in two vehicles.
A 52-year-old woman, inside the unit, has approached the closed wooden front door and was shot once through the door.
She was transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital, where she remains with non-life-threatening facial injuries.
Detectives are appealing for any witnesses or people with dashcam vision on Morayfield Road, Graham Road or Hargrave Street between 9.45pm and 10.30pm last night to contact police.

North Brisbane’s worldly women event

On Saturday November 2, the final of our 2019 quarterly ‘Worldly Women Meet, Greet and Eat Afternoon’ events was held.
Theses events are such a huge success due to the collaboration of community groups that work together to ensure that this event is accessible for all members of our North Brisbane community.
The event provides an opportunity for women to come together to promote support, friendship and harmony through sharing of food, and dancing.
Many of the women who attend this event are either newly arrived to Queensland and are from a large range of CALD backgrounds.
At this latest event, there were women from Australia, Iran, Iraq, Samoa, Fiji, Columbia, Burma, Nepal, Bhutan, Papua New Guinea, Philippines, India, Pacific Islands, and South Sudan.

Think U Know cyber safety in North Brisbane

On Tuesday November 5, officers from the Gateway Crime Prevention Office and Police Liaison Officers attended Mary McKillop College at Nundah to deliver the Think U Know program to year seven, eight and nine students.
Think U Know is a partnership between the Australian Federal Police, Commonwealth Bank, Microsoft and Datacom and delivered in partnership with all State and Territory Police and Neighbourhood Watch Australasia.
The cyber safety presentations sensitively cover a range of age appropriate topics including sexting, cyber bullying, online child exploitation, online privacy, and importantly what to do when something goes wrong.

Presentations are aimed at parents, carers and teachers and young people from Kindergarten to Grade 12.
In yesterday’s presentation, the students  discussed the benefits of technology, how to keep themselves safe online and the importance of being respectful, along with questioning whether the information found online is reliable.

Break and enter charges, North Brisbane

For the past two months police from North Brisbane have been  conducting investigations in relation to break and enter offences at places of worship and stolen cash.
As a result of these investigations, on October 27, a 29-year-old Everton Hills man was charged with 24 counts of enter premises and commit indictable offence by break. He will appear in the Brisbane Magistrates Court on November 21 to have the charges heard.
Police would like to thank members of the public for their assistance in this investigation which has had a big impact on the local communities.

Attempted robbery, Tingalpa

Detectives are appealing for witnesses in relation to an attempted robbery at Tingalpa on November 1.
At 10:45pm, a man entered the Manly Road business and threatened a staff member with a knife whilst demanding money.
The 67-year-old staff member secured himself in the console office and the man left the business empty handed.
The man is described as, 178cm tall, Caucasian in appearance, with a slim build. He was wearing a light grey long sleeved shirt, grey pants with two black stripes down the leg and black shoes. He was also wearing a “devil Halloween” mask.
Any one who has any information in relation to this incident is asked to contact the police.

Coffee with a Cop, Taigum

For the past 10 months, police have attended Taigum Shopping Centre on the first Tuesday of every month for a monthly Coffee with A Cop event.
This community based event has been a fantastic and consistent opportunity for community members to have a free cuppa with their local cops.

It gives community members the opportunity to discuss local matters and ask any questions that they have.
It is also a great opportunity for police to talk about crime prevention strategies including vehicle and home security, personal safety, scams and fraud .
Police would like to thank Taigum Square for their support in this successful community engagement activity.

North Brisbane officers awarded at Neighbourhood Watch conference

On Saturday, November 2, the annual conference for Neighbourhood Watch (NHW) Queensland was held in Towoomba where police and Neighbourhood Watch community members gathered to attend the annual awards ceremony, coupled with a day of learning from numerous guest speakers.

Police from North Brisbane are extremely proud to come home with two awards:

Senior Constable Carol Spurdle from Hendra Crime Prevention won the Liaison Officer of the Year award for the North Brisbane District
Mrs Katherine Bourke, who is the area coordinator for Hendra NHW group won the Community Member of the Year for the North Brisbane District

Assistant Commissioner Brett Schafferius said the award winners went above and beyond to work in partnership with the QPS and their community members.
