Wavell students catching up on the law

On Thursday August 22, Boondall Police were invited to attend Wavell State High School to speak with the Year 11 Social and Community Studies Class.

While the officers delivered a presentation on Laws and Consequences, they were also on hand to answer the many and varied questions that the students had.
A very popular question was how young people could join the Queensland Police Service.
If you would like further information on how to become a member of the QPS visit the Queensland Police Recruiting here.
Thanks to Wavell SHS for the invitation to speak with their wonderful students.

The science behind road safety: Drink and drug driving

This week is Queensland Road Safety Week and together with Department of Transport and Main Roads, StreetSmarts, we’re committed to putting road safety first. In 2018, 245 people were killed on Queensland roads.
Did you know that in 2018, 119 people were killed on Queensland roads as a result of drink or drug driving? That’s almost 50 per cent (48.6 per cent) of the total 2018 road toll.

A drink or two with a mate can be a recipe for a great time but if you plan to drink, you should always plan not to drive.
Alcohol causes blurred vision, a reduction in hearing, reduced attention span and a slowing down of reaction time.
All of these things are crucial to safely operating a motor vehicle.
Did you know? If you have a breath alcohol concentration level of just 0.15, you are 22 times more likely to become involved in a crash.
The facts:

Vehicles targeted across North Brisbane

Police in North Brisbane have seen the theft of 19 Nissan Patrol 4WDs with eight recovered and are reminding all vehicle owners to ensure they remain vigilant with their vehicle security.
Further, in the last 30 days, six Nissan Patrol 4WDs were reported stolen. Of these, five were stolen without keys.
Investigators believe offenders are smashing windows to gain entry to the vehicles to then remove and replace ignition barrels to mobilise them.
There have also been reports of offenders towing 4WDs using tow-straps or placing on the back of tow trucks.
Investigators hold concerns that these stolen Nisan Patrols may be re-birthed or stripped for parts.
Police encourage the community to report any suspicious behaviour and remind all motorists to ensure their vehicles are fully locked and secure at all times,  with no valuables left in the vehicles.

The science behind road safety: Seatbelts

This week is Queensland Road Safety Week and together with Department of Transport and Main Roads, StreetSmarts, we’re committed to putting road safety first. In 2018, 245 people were killed on Queensland roads.
Did you know that in 2018, 30 people were killed on Queensland roads as a result of not wearing proper restraints (seatbelt), where restraint use was known?

A lot of science has gone into the construction and introduction of seatbelts in modern cars.
The seatbelt is one of the most simple safety devices in a vehicle and the outcomes of using it can be life-saving, by stopping you and your passengers from being thrown from the vehicle or through the windscreen in a crash.
The facts:

All people travelling in a vehicle fitted with seatbelts must be appropriately restrained unless exempted.
One in four vehicle occupant fatalities in 2018 were unrestrained, where restraint use was known.

And if you choose not to:

Coffee with a Cop for Queensland Road Safety Week

Gateway Crime Prevention Office staff  joined with Hendra Neighbourhood Watch Groups, Crime Stoppers, Boondall Road Policing Unit, and MP Leanne Linard to promote Queensland Road Safety Week at Kitchen 8 at Northgate today.
There was some great conversations around the merchandise that was given out to the community, which included a phone case that prompts drivers to put their phone away whilst driving.
Driving while using a mobile phone held in your hand is illegal even if you’re stopped in traffic. This means you can’t:

Hold the phone next to or near your ear with your hand;
Write, send or read a text message;
Turn your phone on or off; or
Operate any other function on your phone.

So the best solution is to take away the temptation is to put your phone in the road safety first carry case before you start the car.
So come and see us at Westfield Chermisde on Thursday August 29, between

Sisters Stepping Forward

In March 2019, officers from North Brisbane initiated the Sisters Stepping Forward project.
Sisters Stepping Forward is aimed at bridging the gap, establishing strong relationships, enhancing awareness and sharing knowledge between Muslim women, the QPS and the wider community.
On Monday August 26, our third official event was held at the Lutwyche mosque.
The event was attended by multiple external partner agencies including different QPS sections including Crime Prevention, Engagement and Diversion Program, Police Liaison Officers, Volunteers In Policing, and sisters from the Lutwyche mosque community.
The women were able to share stories, and experiences,  a few laughs and tears, and share delicious food from many different cultural backgrounds.
The Sisters Stepping Forward project is a 12 month  project, with the next official event being held on Wednesday October 9 from 5.30pm-7.30pm at the Lutwyche Mosque, with the topic of women’s health.
For more information about the project please contact Gateway Crime Prevention Office on Gateway.DCPC@police.qld.gov.au.

The science behind road safety: Speed and safe stopping distances

This week is Queensland Road Safety Week and together with Department of Transport and Main Roads, StreetSmarts, we’re committed to putting road safety first. In 2018, 245 people were killed on Queensland roads.
You might think that travelling just one or two kilometres over the posted speed limit is ok, but the reality is that this is never ok.

In 2018, 50 people died on Queensland roads and 379 were seriously injured, in crashes involving speeding.
To avoid speeding, regularly check your speedometer while driving and drive to the conditions.
Ensure you are not following the car in front too closely and leave a gap of two seconds, increasing this when conditions are poor.
Based on this, why would risk those few extra kilometres per hour?
The facts:

The speed limit in built-up areas in Queensland is 50km/h unless otherwise indicated by signs.
In 2018, one in every five fatalities were as a result of speed.

If you choose
