Sergeant Billy Li is a branch manager for PCYC in the Whitsundays. Before he took that role and when we caught up with him he was a Cultural Advisory Officer with the Queensland Police Service (QPS) Cultural Engagement Unit, and he loves the challenges and rewards of his career.
“My role is very unique, it’s very special and it’s very diverse and it’s nothing like any other job in the Queensland Police Service,” Sergeant Li said.
Working in policy and program development, the Cultural Engagement Unit links the QPS with many multicultural and Indigenous bodies in Australia to provide reviews, advice, consultation and education to the QPS and the public.
These include partnerships and discussions with local communities and cultural groups as well as government departments, non-government organisations and other Australian law enforcement agencies.

This operation coincides with the June/July school holidays and a period in which there is an increase in vehicles using Queensland roads.
The operation will include strategies such as a highly visible police presence on Queensland roads and roadside drug and alcohol testing for police to detect offences and enforce the road rules.
Assistant Commissioner Keating said Operation Cold Snap would reinforce the fatal five factors:

My Story: Sergeant Alicia Finigan, fingerprint expert

When you think of a fingerprint expert the first image your mind conjures up is probably from the iconic TV series CSI or one from the thousands of true crime docos that saturate Netflix’s viewing catalogues.
But art doesn’t always imitate life and the role of a fingerprint expert is far more sophisticated than TV shows will have you believe.

Paws up for a successful Dogs on Patrol

On Sunday June 16, North Brisbane Police were proud to meet over 2,500 people and their furry friends who came out for the annual Dogs On Patrol event, held at Roy Harvey Park.
Dogs of all shapes and sizes came out for the event which was a fantastic opportunity for the Queensland Police Service (QPS), and stall holders, to engage with a very dog-friendly crowd.

During the event, the Gateway Crime Prevention Office were pleased to spread the crime prevention word and reinforce that community safety and crime prevention is everyone’s responsibility.
Joining crime prevention officers on the day, was around 20 recruits who assisted with the set up and pack down (much needed when the afternoon storm rolled in).
These eager recruits also played a vital role in Dog Squad demonstrations where a PD and their handler searched and located contraband material on the recruits – a great way for the community to

Gateway officers thank their ViPs with Christmas in June

Although National Volunteer Week was celebrated in May this year, officers from the Gateway Patrol Group recently took time to host a Christmas in June lunch to thank all of the wonderful volunteers in policing (ViPs), and acknowledge their generous contribution.
In total, there are currently eight ViPs who volunteer their time and energy to assist the Gateway Crime Prevention team in serving the community.
Some of these ViPs have volunteers for over 15 years and as a group, they have accumulated over 11,000 hours serving the QPS and the community, in the past 15 years.
In North Brisbane, a ViPs main role is to conduct personal visits to victims of crime who are over the age of 65 years, often called a Police Assisting and Liaising with Seniors (PALS) visit.
Everyone has the right to feel safe at all times and it’s important for everyone to take proactive steps to ensure their safety.

Protest – Brisbane City

Police in Brisbane were kept busy with a large-scale protest which started in the city CBD before moving to South Brisbane.
The Queensland Police Service (QPS) has undertaken a significant amount of planning with a variety of stakeholders regarding anticipated highly planned, well organised and often illegal protest activity by Issue Motivated Groups (IMGs) and individuals regarding proposed mining activity in central Queensland.
The QPS supports lawful and peaceful protest and is committed to working with groups to plan and facilitate lawful activities.
People associated with the protest started gathering in numbers in Reddacliff Place, Brisbane city at around 5pm.
The large crowd, while noisy was mostly peaceful, listened to speeches before heading across the Victoria Bridge shortly before 6pm.
Protesters staged a brief ‘sit-down’ on the Bridge before moving into Grey Street where another ‘sit-down’ occurred before they marched onto Southbank.
Seven people, six men and one woman, were arrested and detained by police for
