Pedestrian campaign chalks up the safety message

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey joined Acting Superintendent Ivan Sikorsky, Road Policing Command and RACQ Head of Technical and Safety Policy Steve Spalding to launch the ‘Be aware – Cross with care’ pedestrian campaign today.
The initiative is designed to remind pedestrians to be vigilant when crossing the road. Pedestrians in Brisbane’s CBD will be reminded to cross the street with care, with life-saving safety reminders chalked onto footpaths at several city crossing locations.
Mr Bailey said people crossing the street mid-block or metres away from traffic lights was only part of the problem.
“While it is legal to cross the street more than 20 metres from the closest crossing, people should look at their surroundings before stepping out onto the road at any time,” Mr Bailey said.

Police smash drug distribution network in North Brisbane

Detectives have today shut down an alleged drug distribution syndicate operating in North Brisbane, with officers arresting 24 people and seizing Methylamphetamine, cash and replica firearms.
Operation Quebec Bittersweet involved more than 70 officers from Carseldine CIB and other specialist units targeting an alleged drug supply network.
Ongoing investigations uncovered the syndicate was allegedly sourcing and selling large quantities of dangerous drugs including Methylamphetamine.
As part of the operation, police conducted raids at 27 addresses across the North Brisbane District, resulting in 24 people being arrested on 75 charges including five persons charged with trafficking.
Property seized as part of the investigation included $20,000 in cash, numerous weapons and replica firearms, and a quantity of Methylamphetamine.
A 45-year-old man from Bald Hills, who was the alleged ring-leader of the syndicate, was charged with 17 offences including one count of trafficking in dangerous drugs, nine counts of supplying dangerous drugs and one count each of receiving

Eid ul-Adha Festival Lutwyche

It’s that time again… Eid ul-Adha Festival.
Eid ul-Adha festival is an annual event held by the Lutwyche Mosque located on Fuller Street, Lutwyche.
The Eid ul-Alha Festival is one of two festivals celebrated in the Muslim faith each year. Eid al-Adha (Eid-ul-Adha) is also known as the Feast of Sacrifice or Festival of Sacrifice.
This observance commemorates accomplishment,  Eid al-Adha also serves as a reminder of when Ibrahim (Abraham) was willing to sacrifice his son to God, according to Islamic belief.
Stafford Police attend this event along with other specialist units to support the ongoing strong collaborative partnerships with the Lutwyche Mosque and all sectors of the community.

Assault appeal for witnesses, Fortitude Valley

Detectives investigating an alleged assault that left a man with severe facial fractures in Fortitude Valley earlier this month are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed the incident.
Around 1.43am on Sunday August 5, an altercation occurred involving a large group of people outside licensed premises in Ann Street resulting in a 21-year-old man sustaining facial injuries.
Anyone in the area during 1.30am and 2am on August 5 who may be able to assist with investigations, particularly pedestrians with mobile phone footage or road users with dash cam vision, is urged to contact police.
Investigations into the alleged incident are continuing.

Update – Wilful damage, Strathpine

Detectives from Pine Rivers Criminal Investigation Branch have released CCTV footage as they appeal for public assistance to identify those responsible for significant damage caused to an office overnight in Strathpine.
Around 1.44am, four reinforced glass windows and two glass doors were smashed at a Gympie Road address with some of the brick pavers also leaving puncture holes in the walls.
Investigators are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious behaviour in the area at the time of the incident to please contact them.

Fatal traffic crash, Banksia Beach

Forensic Crash Unit officers are investigating after a woman has died of injuries sustained in a traffic crash that occurred at Bribie Island on Monday.
On August 20 at 3.45pm, a woman was crossing Seaside Drive when she was hit by a dual cab utility.
A 76-year-old Banksia Beach woman was transported to the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital but passed away early this morning, August 23.
The 56-year-old driver of the utility was not physically injured.
Police are appealing for any witness to the crash, or anyone who may have seen the lady walking prior to the crash to contact them.

2018 Road Safety Week, join us at the Goodwill Bridge

Do you know how many fatalities occurred in Brisbane last year? The answer is 54.
Do you know how many people were involved in a traffic crash in Brisbane, as a result was treated by medical professionals or hospitalised in 2017?  The answer is 1232.
This year Police from Brisbane Crime Prevention units and Brisbane Bike squads would like to invite everyone to join us on Friday, August 31.
Police will host a pop-up table at the Goodwill Bridge providing road safety tips and also have your chance to tell us about road safety and speak up for road safety. Information about bike and vehicle security will also be available.
We will be there between 10am to 12pm. Please join us, join the drive to make the road safer.

Queensland Road Safety Week launched for 2018

Transport and Main Roads Minister Mark Bailey, along with Minister for Police and Minister for Corrective Services, the Honourable Mark Ryan and Commissioner Ian Stewart, have issued an urgent plea to Queensland motorists in the lead up to this year’s Queensland Road Safety Week.
Queensland Road Safety Week is a joint initiative of the Department of Transport and Main Roads and Queensland Police Service working in collaboration with RACQ and CARRS-Q.
The road toll as of 8am this morning was 14 more than this time last year, with 166 lives lost so far.
Mr Bailey urged motorists to consider the risks of unsafe driving every time they got behind the wheel.
“We are preparing for our fourth annual Queensland Road Safety Week next week, but driving safely is a year-round responsibility for all motorists,” Mr Bailey said.
“Last year, distraction, drink driving and riding, fatigue, speeding and not wearing a seatbelt were a factor in 56%

2018 Seniors Week Celebrations

Seniors celebrations
Gateway Crime Prevention in partnership with Zillmere PCYC and North Brisbane Neighbourhood Watch  hosted the annual Super Safe Seniors Morning Tea as part of 2018 QLD Seniors Week celebrations.
The delicious morning tea was followed by presentations from informative guest speakers including the DTMR Road Safety Officers, who prompted lots of healthy debate when discussing road rule refreshers.

Other presenters were Seniors Enquiry Line, QPS Elder Abuse Unit, Stay Strong Personal Training and  North Brisbane NHW.
QLD Seniors Week is about creating a Queensland for ALL AGES and provides opportunities to promote positive community attitudes towards older people and ageing, facilitate community participation, and enhance community connections.
This event was funded by the Queensland Government and supported by COTA Queensland.
