Using a mobile phone while driving is highly distracting and can significantly increase the risk of crashing, even when using a hands-free kit.
As we near the end of January, police from North Brisbane would like to take the opportunity to remind members of the public of the new infringement penalties that will be in place as of February 1, for drivers caught using their mobile phones.
From this date, fines will increase to $1,000 and a minimum of four demerit points.
The penalties and rules are slightly different depending on the type of licence; open, provisional or learners.
For example, for a second mobile phone offence in 12 months, you will receive another $1,000 fine and a further eight demerit points.
