In recognition of her contribution to environmental efforts, Boomerang Bags Nundah co-coordinator Rachel Long was awarded the Councillors’ Clean Green Choice Award at the 2018 Cleaner Suburbs Awards.
Rachel was part of the group that established Boomerang Bags Nundah, a local branch of the Queensland-based group Boomerang Bags.
Boomerang Bags Nundah is made up of volunteers who sew reusable bags from recycled materials. They meet regularly every 2nd and 4th Thursday evening each month at Nundah Neighbourhood Centre.
Aside from the Nundah-based group, Rachel also created the first ‘Burbs to the Bay’ Kedron Brook Bikeway litter clean-up event. This event followed Kedron Brook across six council wards to clean up the waterways.
Aside from Rachel, this year’s Cleaner Suburbs Awards also hailed the efforts of schools, community groups and individuals. The event recognised groups and individuals for their efforts in litter prevention, waste innovation, and clean-up efforts.
“The Cleaner Suburb Awards champion the achievements of residents and groups who are working together for a clean and green city and today we have recognised 14 individuals, groups and businesses for their dedication to sustainability,” Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said.
This year’s winners share in a prize pool of $4,000.
Plastic bags will be banned in Queensland on 1 July and in Nundah, that’s no problem at all. A local group has been hard at work making a great alternative – Boomerang Bags.
Aside from gradually eradicating the use of plastic in the community that causes harm to the environment, this initiative also brings everybody together. Conversations start and friendships are formed whilst meeting up to make reusable bags.
With such a great initiative, Cr Adam Allan of Northgate helped the group obtain funding for equipment that will help them make the bags through the Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund grant.
On 12 May, there will be Nundah Boomerang Bags available by donation at the Toombul Shopping Centre whilst on 3 June it will be available at the Green Heart Fair in Chermside.
In June-July, the boomerang bags will be available by donation every Sunday at the Nundah Farmers Markets.
If you want to help make bags, you can just drop by at the neighbourhood centre from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. every Thursday until the 28th of June.
Boomerang Bags (BB) is a non-profit grassroots initiative that empowers the community to engage in productive activities to reduce the use of plastic bags, such as sewing and distributing reusable shopping bags. BB Nundah aims to provide 100 bags to the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre and its food drives. In line with this mission, BB Nundah is inviting the community to join their first “Sewing Bee”. No worries, sewing skills are not necessary.
Donate your time and help the BB Nundah reach their goal. All equipments and materials will be provided.
Nundah State School will come alive to celebrate a “World of Fun in a Day”! This is a family fun day with heaps of family entertainment, multicultural food, community group stalls and displays, raffles, silent auctions, and carnival amusement rides.
Armbands are already on sale. You can either purchase the armbands online or on the day of the event. For online purchases, bring your receipts to the ticket booth to collect the armbands.
Speedzone Roller Sports Club will hold a speed skating marathon and a half marathon on Sunday. The Speed Championships is open for the club members and all other clubs of Skate Australia. The club also invites the Nundah community to spectate and support the championships. This event is also an opportunity to introduce what Inline Speed Skating is all about.
