Speed Limit Reduction Applied in Sections of Melton Road

Heads up, North Brisbane motorists! The speed limit on a busy section of Melton Road has been reduced to 50km/h from 60km/h.

Signs along Melton Road, specifically between Toombul Road in Northgate to Buckland Road in Nundah, have been installed informing of the speed limit changes, effected February 2023, so that all motorists can slow down and keep the roads safer.

Cr Adam Allan said that the change was adapted to keep the speed consistent and “suitable for the road and the surrounding usage,” especially following the completion of the Melton and Hows Roads.

Per Council, the said intersection is accessed by over 15,000 vehicles, 35 cylists and hundreds of pedestrians a day. Its volume has been projected to increase, especially during peak hours, by 2031. Thus, the new roundabout had to be built, alongside a new pedestrian crossing and shared paths. It has also prompted a need to change the speed limit.

“This will be consistent with the remaining southern section of Melton Road that is already 50km/h and remove confusion where the speed limit currently varies,” Mr Allan said.

“My request for this change was approved via the Speed Management Committee which is comprised of representatives from the State Department of Transport and Main Roads, the Queensland Police Service and the relevant local council.”

Northgate Park ‘n’ Ride Preferred Design to Add 350 Car Parks on Ridge Street

A preferred design has been chosen for the planned expansion of the Northgate Park ‘n’ Ride facility. After the presentation of four options during the planning phase, feedback for Option D, which offers a multi-storey parking facility along Ridge Street, emerged as the most popular choice.

Once approved and completed, Option D will provide commuters with 350 extra car parks, including disabled parking, new bike storage facilities, CCTV security, and better lighting for safety purposes.

Per studies and investigations by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR), Option D was chosen because it has the following features:

  • large, rectangular shape (which is more efficient and reduces construction costs)
  • separated entry and exit points, minimising localised congestion and traffic delays
  • close proximity and good access to the train station, local bus stops and major roads
  • existing adjoining land use (mostly light commercial), which would impact less on the community.

Other sites considered for Northgate Park ‘n’ Ride are all on the western side of the existing facility but have smaller and irregular shapes. These areas (Option A, B and C) also have low to medium residential densities.

The community consultation for Option D was completed on 18 November 2021 and TMR is moving on to finalise planning and to seek approval for the business case by the end of the year.

In the last few years, residents around the Northgate Park ‘n’ Ride have complained of traffic, blockages in their driveway, and lack of street parking spaces amidst the increase of people using the park ‘n’ ride. This station has been a popular and busy junction for the  Caboolture and Shorncliffe lines.

TMR has been actively planning the expansion since the 2018-2019 financial year.

Northgate Community Completes Successful Tree Planting Activity

A group of residents from Northgate has completed a tree planting activity on Saturday, the 23rd of March, with much success.

Councillor Adam Allan, who sponsored the project along with the Brisbane City Council, confirmed in a post on Facebook that the volunteers were able to plant more than 250 different trees by the side of the streets.

Wearing their most comfortable gardening clothes, shoes and hats, the volunteer residents met at the Plaisted Place Park before 9:00 a.m. to receive instructions from the experts. Mr Allan posted a video showing a staff from Treescape who demonstrated to the residents the proper way to plant the trees.

After working until 12:00 p.m., the following streets in Northgate now have newly-planted trees:

  • Almond Street
  • Belmore Street
  • Cavendish Street
  • Cook Street
  • Flower Street
  • Gympie Street
  • Krone Street
  • Little Street
  • Love Street
  • Maynard Street

  • Pole Street
  • Ridge Street
  • Ross Street
  • Saint Vincents Road
  • Sapsford Street
  • Scott Street
  • Toombul Street

As a token of gratitude, the volunteers were given free native plants, which they could plant in their own garden at home. The participants also enjoyed a sausage sizzle to cap their morning.

The Council will continue to provide these trees with water and maintenance services throughout the year. With proper care, these trees should bring more shade, cool winds and visually pleasing greens around the streets of Northgate.

The development will also have an outdoor seating area. This will be located in the existing covered courtyard area between the two existing warehouse spaces on site.

Similar to Aether Brewing’s plan, the proposed microbrewery facility also has a capacity of processing less than 200 tonnes per annum.

Northgate will have a vast number of beer options once the two development applications earn the Council’s approval. This adds to the growing brewery industry in Brisbane.
