This expansion marks Premier Touch’s first full season at the Nudgee venue, following a 7-week mini-competition held earlier this year which saw participation from five teams. The new location aims to fill a gap in social sports offerings in the area, with the next closest option being in Wavell Heights.

The competitions are designed for ages 14 and up, providing an opportunity for locals to keep fit while having fun. The upcoming season will run for 13 weeks, including 11 regular rounds and two rounds of finals. Teams can consist of mixed genders, with competitions held on Monday evenings.

Premier Touch has a long-standing history in Brisbane, having organised social touch football competitions since the 1980s. The organisation currently operates across six venues in the city, including Bardon, Bellbowrie, Fairfield, Mt Gravatt, and West End, in addition to the new Nudgee location. Over 80 teams participate across these venues in a season.

Early bird nominations, which close on July 8th, offer a $100 discount on the full competition fee of $950. Teams registering early will pay $850, which works out to approximately $77 per player for a team of 11.

For teams looking to participate from the start of the season, nominations must be submitted by August 1st to be included in the draw for Round 1. However, Premier City Touch welcomes late nominations throughout the season. Those who miss the initial deadline can still register, and the organisation will assist with late entry arrangements.

For those interested in participating, team nominations can be submitted through the Premier Touch website at premiercitytouch.com.au. The organisation welcomes players of all skill levels and encourages anyone looking for a way to stay active and connect with others in the community to get involved.

Nudgee Recreation Reserve: Brisbane’s Newest Sporting Gem Beckons

The Nudgee Recreation Reserve, now Brisbane’s newest multi-sports park and recreation reserve, made its debut for the summer holidays, heralding a new era of recreational development in the region.

Once an idle piece of land, the site has undergone a remarkable transformation into a sporting haven. Nudgee Recreation Reserve is set to become the flagship location for Football Queensland’s latest northern Brisbane facilities.

Football Queensland has been granted the lease for this $35 million recreational marvel. The facility encompasses six state-of-the-art playing fields, a clubhouse, and community spaces, forming a pivotal part of the Metro North hub for football. This development aims to address the growing demands in Brisbane, where the sport has over 100,000 club-based and social participants.

Meeting the Soaring Demand for Football Facilities

Remarkably, the six football fields at Nudgee Recreation Reserve are already reserved at full capacity from Monday to Friday, well ahead of its official opening. This underscores the pressing need for sports facilities in the region and the strong demand for such amenities.

Football Queensland has thoughtfully reserved certain slots on weekends for community use, ensuring that residents can also enjoy this remarkable facility. Various community programs, including Girls United, Walking Football, Multicultural Settlement Program, and MiniRoos Kick-Off, will find their home at the Nudgee Recreation Reserve. Football Queensland plans to offer additional programs such as the FQ Academy, FQ Referee Academy, coach education, and Queensland state team sessions at this venue. Local community clubs will also benefit from valuable field space, further enriching the overall sporting experience in the area.

Leo Sancini, Vice President of the Brisbane City Football Club, expressed his enthusiasm for the Nudgee Recreation Reserve, particularly highlighting its potential for growth in both women’s and men’s football. As the city anticipates the upcoming Olympics, the facility’s presence will undoubtedly open doors for many aspiring football players, providing countless opportunities for the community to embrace this beloved sport.

A Multi-Sport Facility for the Community

However, its appeal extends far beyond just the football enthusiasts. This recreational gem boasts an array of amenities, including a playground, BMX pump track, and even a dedicated dog park, promising a wide range of activities to cater to the diverse interests of the local community.

The Nudgee Recreation Reserve’s versatile sporting fields are designed to accommodate a variety of sports, including touch football, cricket, and soccer. In addition, a new 223-space car park and pathway connections to Nudgee Train Station and Railway Street have been established to ensure easy accessibility for all.

Further work on the clubhouse interior, including sports field lighting, change rooms, meeting rooms, storage, and public toilets, is expected to be completed in early 2024.

Initiated by BCC in late April 2022, the Nudgee Recreation Reserve Improvement Project spans an impressive 12.5 hectares. This initiative represented a collaborative effort to repurpose a former landfill into a thriving recreational hub.

“Football Queensland are looking forward to working with our community clubs and schools,  creating more places for the local community to play football and deliver more programs to improve the football experience for participants of all ages, abilities and backgrounds, ” Cr Adam Allan said in an announcement made with LM Adrian Schrinner and Football Queensland CEO Robert Cavallucci.

The comprehensive scope of the transformation of the Nudgee Recreation Reserve includes:

  • shared use sporting fields that will cater to multiple sports including touch football, cricket and soccer
  • sports field lighting to improve night-time visibility and safety for park users
  • a new 223-space car park and pathway connections to Nudgee Train Station and Railway Street for easy access
  • a new clubhouse with change rooms, canteen, storage, meeting rooms and public toilets.
  • a dog off leash area
  • BMX track
  • playground, picnic settings with shelters and barbeque facility
  • walking/running/cycling path

Targetting completion by December 2023, the project’s timeline remains contingent on weather conditions and on-site progress.

“A huge thank you to the community for your patience while works have been undertaken during the course of the upgrade project. I look forward to keeping the community updated as the works progress towards completion,” Cr Adams said, adding that the steadfast support of the community has been a driving force throughout the transformation of the Nudgee Recreation Reserve.

Nudgee Recreation Reserve to Become a District Sports and Recreation Park

A development application has been submitted to turn the Nudgee Recreation Reserve into a sports and recreation park based on designs made by the City Projects Office of the Brisbane City Council.

For use among residents of Nudgee, Banyo and Virginia, the planned precinct will be upgraded to allow the community to play cricket, football and soccer. The park will also have a BMS track and paths for cycling or running whilst a corner will be set up as an outdoor gym. Lights will be installed to improve the park’s visibility, especially if there are games extending up to sundown.

A building with changing rooms, canteen, toilets and meeting rooms will also be constructed for community use. The sports and recreational park will be open for all ages and abilities as it will have a kids’ playground and a dog off-leash area.

But before the construction, the site will be decontaminated and undergo remediation as Nudgee Recreation Reserve was once a landfill.

According to Council, investigation and testing on the site were done in late June 2020 to check the compaction to mitigate potential risks. Until March 20201, stockpiling works were undertaken to prepare the ground.

Work is expected to start in 2021, once the development application has been approved (DA A005685740). The DA was lodged in mid-March 2021.

“While the Nudgee Recreation Reserve will remain open throughout these works, some areas will need to be fenced off temporarily for safety reasons while works take place,” Council stated. “Access through the Nudgee Recreation Reserve via Elliott Road to Railway Street will continue to be accessible at all times.”
