Plastic bags will be banned in Queensland on 1 July and in Nundah, that’s no problem at all. A local group has been hard at work making a great alternative – Boomerang Bags.
Aside from gradually eradicating the use of plastic in the community that causes harm to the environment, this initiative also brings everybody together. Conversations start and friendships are formed whilst meeting up to make reusable bags.
With such a great initiative, Cr Adam Allan of Northgate helped the group obtain funding for equipment that will help them make the bags through the Lord Mayor’s Suburban Initiative Fund grant.
On 12 May, there will be Nundah Boomerang Bags available by donation at the Toombul Shopping Centre whilst on 3 June it will be available at the Green Heart Fair in Chermside.
In June-July, the boomerang bags will be available by donation every Sunday at the Nundah Farmers Markets.
If you want to help make bags, you can just drop by at the neighbourhood centre from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. every Thursday until the 28th of June.
Boomerang Bags (BB) is a non-profit grassroots initiative that empowers the community to engage in productive activities to reduce the use of plastic bags, such as sewing and distributing reusable shopping bags. BB Nundah aims to provide 100 bags to the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre and its food drives. In line with this mission, BB Nundah is inviting the community to join their first “Sewing Bee”. No worries, sewing skills are not necessary.
Donate your time and help the BB Nundah reach their goal. All equipments and materials will be provided.
Nundah State School will come alive to celebrate a “World of Fun in a Day”! This is a family fun day with heaps of family entertainment, multicultural food, community group stalls and displays, raffles, silent auctions, and carnival amusement rides.
Armbands are already on sale. You can either purchase the armbands online or on the day of the event. For online purchases, bring your receipts to the ticket booth to collect the armbands.
Speedzone Roller Sports Club will hold a speed skating marathon and a half marathon on Sunday. The Speed Championships is open for the club members and all other clubs of Skate Australia. The club also invites the Nundah community to spectate and support the championships. This event is also an opportunity to introduce what Inline Speed Skating is all about.
The third annual Nundah Art Show will happen in just a few days! On 2nd to 4th of June, the doors of Nundah Neighbourhood Centre will open to showcase some of the best works of art. The entry (for artists) ended last 21st of May for both major categories: Painting, Jewellery, Mixed Media, Photography, and Work on Paper; and the minor category Local Novice, wherein the entry for beginners’ and amateurs’ artwork is free to ensure that these artists can participate and showcase their talents. There are different prizes for each category that can be checked through the event page.
By the end of May, the collection of artwork will be available at the centre for the opening night on 2nd of June, the evening viewing, awards presentation, and raffles and prizes. Everyone is invited to come on this event. Entry will only require a “Gold Coin Donation”.
Participate by nominating your favourite art piece in the “People Choice Award” through postcards available at the event or at your local purveyor. Voting will start on the opening night until the last day of the art show. The daily viewing on 3rd and 4th of June will commence from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Take time to drop by and check out the collection; you might never know what you can find at the exhibit as the artwork are for sale.
The Advocacy of Nundah Art Show
The Nundah Neighbourhood Centre Art Show began in 2015 to raise awareness and funds for the issue of domestic violence. The 2016 Art Show was successful in channeling the funds that they have raised into programs such as art therapy workshops for women who are victims of domestic violence.
In line with their advocacy, this year’s art show will include a charity luncheon organised by the Nundah Neighbourhood Centre and the Hillhouse Burrough McKeown Lawyers, the major sponsor of the art show, to support the programs and workshops. During the luncheon, speakers Rebecca Poulson, Kim Burgess, and Wendy Cumes will share their stories and some important information on domestic violence.
Attending the luncheon will give participants the opportunity to pre-purchase artwork prior to the opening night. Further information can be viewed on the event page.
Art Show: Live
One week before the event, a week-long event was held by Toombul Shopping Centre, the principal sponsor of the art show. Artists shared their talents at the pop-up gallery as a teaser for the Nundah Art Show 2017.
