On Saturday, September 21, for the second year running, the Queensland Police Service hosted the ‘Bringing Cultures Together’ community event at the Zillmere PCYC.
This year the theme for the event was Healthy Relationships, and Domestic and Family Violence.
Uncle Alex Davidson, a local Elder, gave an acknowledgement to country to open the event, and welcomed people of all cultures and nationalities to share the traditional land.
Mrs Archna Singh, Honorary Consulate of India, for Queensland, spoke about the added complexity to domestic violence matters where cultural aspects, including Dowry, Migration Law and visas, shame and isolation add to the complexity of an already complex and difficult subject of Domestic Violence.
The community also had the opportunity to hear presentations from QPS ‘Vulnerable Person Unit’, and Emerson Family Law, with specific and detailed information on how the Migration Act works with the Domestic and Family Violence Act and the Family Law Act.
